Every now and then things can happen when we least expect them. Sometimes we can be thinking about something; travelling, learning a language, developing a skill or broadening job prospects for example, and out of the blue an opportunity linked to the thoughts can arise. Other times something can come into your life completely unexpectedly.
Two weeks ago, Chris was approached by a recruiter on behalf of Facebook, enquiring whether he would be interested in being put forward for a fantastic opportunity based in London.
We had a few light hearted discussions about being settled near Stoke with our little terraced house and family and friends nearby, but said that should further information make the job opportunity worth serious consideration, we could look into the prospect of relocating or commuting.
During our chat, I commented about whether opportunities that could give me the chance to grow my skills further and bring my enthusiasm for online properties into a new arena would be possible to find in London. I think this took Chris by surprise, however my sense of adventure and love of exploring new experiences make me keen to keep an open mind regarding the path I travel, with my career and with life in general. Today I sit here wondering whether my thoughts set a wheel in motion…
I have become aware of an opportunity that could give me the chance to grow in a huge way, were I successful in pursuing it. There are no guarantees, there are no assumptions to be made, but there are two things I have taken from this. Firstly, being contacted about a position of this nature left me feeling very proud and also flattered; proud that my hard work and commitment has made me stand out enough to be noticed, flattered that I stood out enough to be contacted.
The second thing that I take from this is that whatever happens, whether I hear no more, or whether I get the chance to explore the opportunity in more detail, I, like Chris when he was contacted by Facebook, can enjoy that warm feeling of recognition.
Perhaps there’s a third thing to take away from this too. Whenever people are in a situation where somebody has helped them out as a friend or a colleague, or if you manage people and give them tasks to do, take a little time to flatter them now and then. Recognition of a job well done can not only make somebody feel good about themselves, but give them confidence that can help them become even more successful and valued. Flattery can be everything!
And in London there is also a friend who would dearly love to see you!
